Spray Foam Insulation is the Preferred Way

spray foam insulation

Spray foam insulation protects against moisture, which both protects the structural integrity of the building, and mitigates against the growth of mold and mildew.

Inadequate insulation of your attic can significantly increase your heating and cooling costs.

It’s a hidden cost, in that you don’t know how much you are overpaying – until you remedy the situation. However it is estimated that 40% of a home’s energy is lost as a result of air infiltration through walls, windows and doorways. A drafty attic is a prime culprit.

It is also estimated that buildings treated with spray foam insulation are protected up to 50% better than those with traditional insulation products.

This advantage of spray foam insulation comes from its superior ability to provide continuity over the many imperfections and discontinuities that characterize most wall assemblies. And, as anyone who has ever been in an attic can attest, this applies doubly to attics, which have been subjected over the years to the elements. Spray foam insulation can spread evenly over irregular walls, corners, gaps, masonry ties, equipment penetrations, nail protrusions, ductwork and plumbing.

It also has the incidental benefit of creating a sound barrier and substantially reducing airborne sound transfer through the building’s roof, floor and walls.

Removal of Existing Insulation

Your home is aging – and so is your insulation. Traditional insulation in bags, panels or seals can sag and lose its seal. This allows air to flow through more easily, with the obvious negative effect on your energy bills. It should be removed.

But removing the old and inefficient insulation from your attic is not just about saving money. The presence of rodents, foul odor and leakage are other reasons to remove insulation. Old insulation may contain vermiculite or fiberglass, both of which can pose health risks. Faulty insulation can become a haven for moisture – and create conditions for the growth of mold and mildew. In the summer, moist air in the attic can affect your roof sheathing and cause shingles to deteriorate. In the winter, heat loss in an attic melts snow, which can form ice dams at the roof edge. Water can back up under shingles, damage to structure of the roof and, at the very least, result in interior leaks.

Who to Call for a Spray Foam Insulation Quote

A quick search on the internet yields any number of companies eager to tap into your insulation dollar.

Look for a firm with roots in your community and some kind of track record with clients. A local firm will be acquainted with the climate or other unique conditions in your area.

If they are up to date with the ever-changing technology and equipment needed to install insulation, it will probably be evident from the site. And finally, check out any reviews they may have from customers.
